T-FENSE 2001
In December 2001, halcyon and nEWYork produced T-FENSE, a not-for-profit gallery installation showcasing original t-shirt designs and hand customized denim clothing. The artwork was donated by 22 vanguard young graphic, graffiti and fine artists chosen for their influence on the look of street culture. They included Rostarr (Nike/Swatch/Arena/Spin), Jeff Staple (Apple/Nike/555 Soul/Staple Design), Tony Arcabascio aka SITES (alife/Mass Appeal/Levi's Vintage), Kevin Carney (Generic Costume), Freddi C. (Red Bull Music Academy/Mooks) and Gavin McInnes (Vice).
With the generous support of presenting sponsor, Mooks Clothing, 16 t-shirts designs created exclusively for T-FENSE were screened in limited editions of 25 hand signed and numbered pieces. The t-shirts were displayed in halcyon's gallery along with six hand painted and customized Mooks denim jackets and jeans. The limited edition t-shirts were available for sale and the denim was auctioned. All proceeds from the event were donated to the Robin Hood Foundation's 911 Disaster Relief Fund.
Three months after 9/11, with New York's vital nightlife paused while youth culture dwelled in a moment of reflection, T-FENSE incited the underground community. The project garnered tremendous support by uniting the worlds of fashion, art and music, providing an outlet for pre-eminent artists and djs to donate their talents to make a difference.
The jam packed opening reception at halcyon attracted over 400 of the underground scene's primary tastemakers. The seven hour event was sponsored by Brookyn Brewery and featured DJs Jon Howard (Om Records, San Francisco), Jaymz Nylon (IRMA) and Reade Truth (Sonic Groove). |
